Jean-Marie Burguburu Elected President of the Conseil National des Barreaux


In their general assembly of September 6, 2013, the Conseil national des barreaux, which represents professional lawyers, elected its new president, Jean-Marie Burguburu, who received 65 of 82 votes.


Jean-Marie Burguburu has been a lawyer at the Paris bar since 1966. He was a member of Governing Council of the Association from 1991 to 1993, he was President of the Paris Bar Association in 2004 and 2005, and since then has sat on the Governing Council of the Association, having chaired both the finance and international committees.

In 2010 he was elected First Vice President of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA), and he was its President-in-Office until the end of October, 2013.

Over the years, Mr. Burguburu has committed his efforts to many of the bar's different professional institutions: the steering committee of the Paris Lawyers' Financial Settlements Fund (CARPA), the administrative council of the National Union of Lawyers' Funds (UNCA), the French delegation to the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), and the National French Bar Association Fund (CNBF). He is a former member of the Conseil national des barreaux for the 2006-2008 term, and in this current term he was the vice chairman of the European and International Affairs Committee for 2012.

He was also a member of the Administrative Council of the Advanced Justice Studies Institute (1993-1999) and the Industrial Property High Council (1996-2010).

Holder of a Law Degree (1966), and Diplomas of Advanced Studies in private law and criminal science, Mr. Burguburu, a graduate of the Paris Faculty of Law and a former assistant at the faculty of law, has devoted a large part of his time to teaching. Specifically, he has been a lecturer in various institutions, including the Institute of Business Administration at the Université de Paris Dauphine, and the National School for Rural Engineering, Water, and Forestry (ENGREF); he lectured on ethics at the Paris Bar School (EFB) (1992-2002), and on industrial property at the Université d’Alicante (1995-1999); and he was an auditor at the Institute of Advanced Studies in National Defense (IHEDN) (1982-1983) and the National Institute for Advanced Studies in Security and Justice (INHESJ) (1990).

Mr. Burguburu is a Commander of the French Legion of Honor, and has been the recipient of many decorations from France and other countries.
